The idea behind the Shell Eco-Marathon, which took place from 11 to 13 May 2007 in Nogaro, France, was to use one liter of fuel to travel as far as possible while emitting as little pollutants as possible. Winner was the vehicle of the French team of the Polytechnic School of Nantes, which overcame 2, 797 kilometers (km) with a liter of gasoline.

The German teams were also impressed by the 23rd edition of the event - in all categories. The Offenburg University of Applied Sciences (2, 716 km / liter) and the TU Chemnitz (2, 552 km / liter) finished podium places 2 and 3 and the newcomer FH Trier (1, 800 km / liter) a respectable 5th place in the hydrogen-powered prototype category.

In the solar class, the Neuruppin Oberstufenentrum, which was the first time with their "Ruppin jet" at the start, behind the French team from Arles, second. And in the urban concept category, the Iselinschule from Rosenfeld was able to conquer the 7th place (198 km / liter) right away.

Therefore congratulations came from Annette Schavan, Federal Minister of Education and Research, who took over the patronage for the German teams for the first time this year: "The excellent results of the German participants in the Shell Eco-Marathon show that Germany and the German universities in the field sustainable energy research as a leader in Europe. "

Ethanol fuel cell in use for the first time

After the second place, the students from Offenburg even had energy for a world premiere: their demonstration drive with a vehicle that is powered by the world's first ethanol fuel cell. The vehicle of the HS Merseburg / Burg Giebichenstein team, which was predominantly made of recyclable materials such as silk, hemp, balsa wood and cotton, also received a great deal of attention - due to technical problems, they unfortunately remained without any indication

valid scoring run.

The other placings of the German teams: 64th place: GTS Offenbach with 519 km / liter 76th place: FH Stralsund with 444 km / liter.
