Over 50 deaths from thunderstorms in South Africa

Day-long rains have caused flooding and landslides around the South African port of Durban. According to the authorities, at least 51 people were killed. According to media reports, the fatalities were crushed by drowning earth masses or drowned in the floods. Many people had to leave their homes because of the extreme weather and have since been accommodated in emergency shelters. Meteorologists expect further heavy precipitation in the region in the coming days.
