Just in time for the end of the millennium, innovative Nasa researchers presented a revolutionary and utopian-sounding report.

Teams of experts are therefore keen to breed new plants that function as programmable bionic life support systems in space colonies and on long-lasting space flights.

These plants will be equipped with remote-controlled microscopic sensors that can monitor cell metabolism, intervene at any time and even turn individual genes on and off. Does this start a new chapter in space travel?
