There is a new German heat record: The 24th of July 2019 was officially the hottest day in Germany since the beginning of the weather records. In Geilenkirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia yesterday 40.5 degrees Celsius were measured, as the German Weather Service announced.

This broke the previous record from 2015. At that time, the thermometers in Kitzingen, Bavaria had indicated 40.3 degrees Celsius for two days. How long the new heat record lasts, however, is uncertain. Because meteorologists expect that only today, the peak of the current heat wave is reached.
