Nobel Prizes 2017
It's that time again: Every year at the beginning of October it is announced who will receive the Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prize Committee honors outstanding achievements in medicine, physics and chemistry. Later, economics, peace and literature follow.
Who will receive the prestigious awards this year? Already last year, it was expected that the first detection of gravitational waves in the Nobel Prize in Physics would make the race. However, according to its own statute, the Nobel Prize Committee can only award a maximum of three people - and the LIGO cooperation, which built the detectors and discovered the waves, consists of more than a thousand scientists.
It is similarly complicated at the Nobel Prize for Medicine: here the CRISPR / Cas9 gene scissors are regarded as the most significant breakthrough of recent years. But even here it is difficult to determine to whom the honor is due. Because there are two research groups argue for the patent and two other researchers have been instrumental in the development of technology.
The winners 2017:
This year's Nobel Prize in Medicine / Physiology will be awarded to the three US researchers Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael Young for the decoding of the internal clock. display
The Nobel Prize in Physics is available for the first detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO detectors in the USA. He is awarded to the three physicists who are considered the founding fathers and obstetricians of the LIGO detectors: Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne and Barry Barish.
Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson - three researchers who have developed cryo-electron microscopy - will receive this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This method has made it possible to see biomolecules in action and to map them atomically.
