On June 1, 2007, Professor dr. Dr.hc Reinhard Hüttl took up his position as Scientific Director and Chairman of the Board of the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ). He succeeds founding director Professor Dr. Ing. Dr.hc Rolf Emmermann.
Hüttl comes from the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus. He has held the Chair for Soil Conservation and Recultivation since 1993 and heads the Research Center for Landscape Development and Mining Landscapes. With Hüttl another internationally renowned scientist with many years of experience in science management will come to the GeoForschungsZentrum.
Hüttl takes over the management of the GeoForschungsZentrum at a time when it has established itself as a globally visible body of geosciences. "GFZ Potsdam is the German Research Center for Geosciences and, as a major research institute, a member of the Helmholtz Association. Emmermann headed the GeoForschungsZentrum from 1992 to 2007, after assuming the role of founding director of the GFZ Potsdam in 1991. Hüttl was a member of the Wissenschaftsrat from 2000 to 2006 and, from 2003 to 2005, chairman of the scientific commission of the Wissenschaftsrat. He was spokesman of the SFB 565 "Disturbed Cultural Landscapes" of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and since this year has been spokesman of the SFB-Transregio 38 "Initial Ecosystem Genesis" of the DFG with the partner universities BTU Cottbus, TU Munich and ETH Zurich.
H ttl has been holding an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna since 2004. H ttl is a member of the following science academies: Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Royal Swedish Academy and the German Academy of Engineering Sciences (acatech), of which he is vice-president.
