Heavy flooding in Iran
Earth ViewRead out
Weeks of rain have led to severe flooding in Iran. Already in March, around 1, 900 towns and villages had been flooded in the normally drought-stricken country. The Iranian authorities have now ordered the evacuation of six other cities in the southwest of the country because of the risk of flooding.
According to official figures, 70 people have died as a result of the floods and tens of thousands have been put into emergency shelters. The Tehran government has offered rapid relief to affected regions, promising to compensate injured farmers for their losses. However, this is likely to be difficult, because the state budget of Iran is already heavily burdened by US sanctions.
