Can you help chance on the jumps? And is gambling all right? We explain the technique behind the "one-armed bandits".

Anyone who has spied on the spinning reels of a slot machine in a gaming hall knows the question: How does it work? Is it possible to manipulate the course, or is it all "pure coincidence"? We answer that question today by taking a look inside the slot machine or programming our own game. By the way: The technique is exactly the same in a virtual game like Mega Molaah and a "real" one armed bandit. So whether you stand in Las Vegas or in the casino around the corner or even gamble on his cell phone, the principle is the same and the odds are usually minimal differ. To find out more in detail here, you should take a look at the payout ratio - how this is calculated, we put the same.

The random number generator - the most important part of a slot machine

When it comes to gambling, coincidence has to be mentioned in the same breath. Similar to a dice game, where it is never possible to say in advance which eyes will be visible after the throw, a slot machine is also inferior to the principle of chance. And this is how it works:

The random number generator (Random Number Generator or RNG for short) runs continuously in the background of the machine and generates several thousand numbers each minute with, for example, 9 digits each, the nature of which is completely random. The game is later based on these numbers, as all scores are later determined by this random number generator. That's what the regulators say. This allows players to be sure everything is done right. Because this system can not be influenced - either by the machine or by the operator.

We test our random number generator on a slot machine

Now we want to test our random number generator on a theoretical slot machine game in order to better understand its mode of action. We think of it as a classic game of spinning reels. The main prize is awarded to the player when a certain symbol appears on all three assumed rolls. These are the characteristics of the game: display

- It has three rollers.

- There are three symbols per cylinder (heart, shamrock and spades)

- There is a payline.

- The prize is paid when the heart appears three times on the payline.

The three reels, each with three symbols, allow combinations of 3 times 3 times 3, ie 27. The win is one of those possibilities, so the chances for the player on the main prize are 1 to 27. That means, you would play all the time statistically every 27 times the hearts on the payline, so the main prize. For the operator to make a profit, the payout of the skin profit must be smaller than the 27-fold stake. Assuming that playing once would cost the player 1 euro, the profit would have to be less than 27 euros, so that the operator has something behind. For example, if the prize is 26 euros, our slot machine has a payout ratio of 96.30%. For every Euro invested, the operator earns 4 cents.

What do the numbers of the random number generator have to do with it?

When the player starts the game, the machine fetches three numbers from the random number generator. He divides the numbers by three and determines the residual value. This can only ever be one digit between zero and two. Each symbol on the machine is assigned one of the numbers. Only if the same number is calculated three times does the same symbol appear three times. If it is the heart, the player gets paid the main prize.

Thus, the operator of the machine increases its profit

Assuming that an operator's chances of winning are too high for the player and his earnings too low, then the payout ratio can of course be postponed in his favor. Therefore, the three reels simply need to be given an additional symbol, for example an X. Thus, the number of possible states increases from 27 to 4 times 4 4 times, that is 64. So now you have to start the game 64 times to be able to win 26 euros. The payout ratio is now only 40.6%. Bad for the player, but good for the operator.

In most cases, machines with particularly low payout rates are used in gaming outlets. Because here are fixed no fixed payout rates. They also do not have to be released, unlike an online casino or state casino.

Of course, most machines have more reels and more symbols, but the principle is always the same.

Fascination play of luck

However high or low certain odds may be, gambling has always exerted a great fascination on humans. That's because it appeals to our reward system. The gambling can not be banned, as the example shows Las Vegas here the unauthorized playing was simply moved to an area outside the walls of the city. In Germany, gaming is only allowed in state-authorized institutions. Online games are still tolerated because it is not possible to regulate the European market accordingly. Although the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig recently confirmed the ban on online casinos, players can still enjoy the thrill of online gambling online.
