Devastating tornado near Aachen

In the Eifel, south of Aachen, a tornado was formed on Wednesday. The Windhose damaged in the community Roetgen about 35 houses and two warehouses. Ten of these buildings are no longer habitable, according to a fire department spokesman, two houses have no upper floor. Five people were easily injured in the storm.
According to estimates, the tornado pulled over Roetgen at speeds of 180 to 200 kilometers per hour. Air ducts rotating around a vertical axis, such as these, arise when moist and cold air masses meet. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), such wind gusts are rare in Central Europe, but they occur again and again. Thus, the DWD registered 17 tornado events throughout Germany last year, including four in North Rhine-Westphalia.
